You can also use the mouse to easily but more slowly perform the same functions without using the Ribbon menu.). It can all be done with rather intuitive keyboard interaction (Press "a" to enter an "A" note, use numpad keys corresponding to the visible keypad to choose duration. And the most basic core usage loop doesn't require using it at all. The Ribbon interface that came in with version 7 is bad, but it's manageable. I struggled to get anything at all done with it. I tried it out once, and found it immensely counter-intuitive to use.

It might be a decent option if you really do need the free option and you need it legally, but outside of that I cannot suggest using it. I'm sure it can be wrangled in to producing better stuff, but the tendency seems to be that they're bad, so I have to assume it's harder to do than with other options. I've seen the results it typically produces, and they are not good. They would be rather useful for a UX designer trying to come along and build a new tool though. They're comedy, not at all useful for actually making your decision here, but they are very amusing nonetheless. I wouldn't judge whether Sibelius is worth buying on the basis of that video.īefore I start, I would highly highly recommend watching these two videos. I think that if you're a UI/UX designer you could learn a lot from the video, but if you're a prospective Sibelius customer, there's nothing worthwhile in there, particularly. The complaint is that stuff isn't discoverable like it should be, but once you know about it, you know about it. But you spend a few minutes learning whatever you need to do once and you never have to worry about it again.

That said, there's a popular video out there about how Sibelius's interface is full of terrible design. On that basis, I'd probably go with Dorico if I were starting over. I'm paying for the work of the Sibelius dev team, not Avid's replacement contractors. So when I occasionally pay for a Sibelius upgrade, I feel bad about giving money to Avid. That dev team went on to start Dorico from scratch, and meanwhile, Sibelius (which I've used now since 2004) gets updates that are at best incremental from whatever lower-cost contractors Avid ended up replacing the original team with. Not answering your question, but: Sibelius was bought over by Avid a few years back, and Avid fired the entire Sibelius dev team. This is something the other programs can't really do nearly as well and what in my mind separates them from the rest of the pack. One more thing, both Lilypond and Dorico pride themselves on being able to produce perfect or nearly perfect scores by default without requiring any tweaking. Completely different approach to entering notes than the others but it's worth considering. Take those pronouncements with a grain of salt until such time as evidence is produced.įinally, Lilypond is another free program that produces high quality scores.

People will often say that Musescore can't produce professional quality scores but then are not able to provide details as to why this is so.

I believe Finale and Sibelius have free trial versions so you can always play around with those and see what you think.Īs a student you are entitled to student discounts on Finale, Sibelius and Dorico, but once you're no longer a student then it's full price so you need to think whether you want to keep paying out the nose for one of these programs for the rest of your life.

Those missing features are being added on a regular basis. If you can live without those features for now then Dorico is probably the best of the commercial programs and I think is likely to become the dominant program in the commercial realm. These are all very good programs capable of producing professional quality scores assuming you have the knowledge to make them produce professional quality scores.ĭorico is the newest program and is still missing a few features that some people can't do without.
